Beck - Nicotine & Gravity
[Where are The Dust Brothers, right now? Where have they been?!?! Midnight Vultures is certainly my favorite Beck record, and this song was probably the first song that made me mad for Beck. He's such an engima. The man has zero personality outside of his music, its like he's only alive when he's creating, the rest of the time he stumbles through the world a diminutive sedated scientologist]

Brand New - Luca
[The band that will never be forgiven for its earlier sins. "Luca" is brilliant and beautifully eerie. Put your cool aside for one brief moment and listen to this tune and tell me its not near perfect. You can even tell your friends you listened by accident thinking it was some Mars Volta B-Side]

Elvis Costello - No Action
[Elvis Costello is my dad. He doesn't know it, and I'm not sure he cares to, but the fact of the matter is, I call him dad. He's absent most of the time, but he sure gives the kid some good advice and for a better role model, I wouldn't dare to ask. Dope drums on this track]

Bjork - It's So Quiet
[I first heard Bjork when I was ill prepared to deal with her mad genius. This song helped me understand Bjork and contextualize her as an artist so I could appreciate some of the more ambitious sonic stuff of hers. She's amazing huh? Oh! Have you seen the video for this?!!? Go find it]

David Bowie - Five Years
[My brain hurts a lot. Bingo Ziggy. Bingo]

The Beatles - Girl
[John Lennon's voice is pleadingly perfect here, isn't it? The song structure is weird and fun and cool and coupled with the recording - dry and brittle - this song is sexy and sad. An amazing combination by any standard]

Scott Walker: 30 Century Man [2006]

dir.Stephen Kijak

Scott Walker, one of the most talented, exciting and exceptional figures in the history of music, has been avoiding the attention of the media for ages. This film does not provide you with the much sought after information about his personal life (which I would have found very interesting, I admit), but instead focuses on his music, which, of course, is much more important. There are a lot of talking heads, mostly famous musicians and people from the music business, listening to Scott Walker's music and describing their impressions and the significance it has for them. Naturally, the most fascinating thing about the movie is Scott Walker himself and the metamorphoses he went through in the course of his musical career, drifting more and more in dark and abstract directions. I would highly recommend the film to anyone who likes Scott Walker (if you do not know who he is, hear some of his music, preferably beginning with the 60s).

The Devil & Daniel Johnston [2005]

dir.Jeff Feuerzeig

The wealth of self-documentation that Johnston has created over his life, starting from childhood, is one of the things that makes this film truly magnificent. Over the years, we can literally see this person change before our eyes, as though gradually being claimed by a dark force. The "dark force" in this case is manic depression; metaphorically The Devil for Johnston, who is a devout Christian. Johnston's struggle to connect with people he loves through the fog of his illness is devastating. While this can be difficult to watch (at least for me), there is the powerful reward of the music and drawings that Johnston has produced throughout, both in spite of and as a direct result of this struggle. That something heartbreakingly beautiful in it's simplicity and honestly can come from such a terrible struggle, is what makes this story and this film remarkable.

Camera Obscura – My Maudlin Career

You kissed me on the forehead
Now this kiss is giving me a concussion
We were love at first sight
Now it's crush
It's crushing
Now choose two stops through the city though
I'm lost easily
I took to the desert but my heart just whines
and deceive me

Now we're in love again
And you're wherevers
I'm not a child I know
We're not going steady

You're pain's gigantic but it's not as big as your ego
Promise not to abandon you, please let me go

Now I've been hurting your feelings
Yeah they were worth protecting
They say I'm too kind and sentimental
Like you could catch affection

Oh in your eyes there's a sadness
Enough to kill the both of us
Are those eyes overrated?
They make me want to give up on love

I'll brace myself for the holiness
Say hello to feelings that I detest

This maudlin career has come to an end
I don't want to be sad again
This maudlin career has come to an end
I don't want to be sad again

This maudlin career has come to an end
I don't want to be sad again
This maudlin career has come to an end
I don't want to be sad again

''Possibly, this is a story about moving on from a friendship, potentially sexual, which is going nowhere, due to the inability of one of the friends to overcome addiction, and function in an unwelcome world. So, "Withnail & I" is a little too vague its dramatic intentions; but, the obliqueness does wind up mirroring Withnail's character. It gives the film a (perhaps unintentional) eerie quality; it's as difficult to completely grasp what's going on beneath the surface as it is for "Withnail & I" to figure out how to exist in reality. The "Hamlet" ending is great; but, before that, some final sequences seem abrupt''

Clerks [1994 ~ USA]

dir. Kevin Smith

''Extraordinarily funny, Clerks gives us a new look on working life i.e. how many messed up things can happen to a person in a single day and just how does one deal with these tough situations. Kevin Smith demonstrates that he is truly fearless, giving his characters some of the most offending lines that are so deliberately insulting that you just have to laugh. This is one of the single funniest films I think I have ever seen and I just wish I'd seen it ten years ago. Anyone who has not seen it, please do so. You have no idea what you're missing. It'll be one of the most hilarious 90 minutes you'll experience. Also no Kevin Smith movie would be the same without a trademark Star Wars reference. With that said, go out and watch Clerks and to you Master K, "May the Force be with you"''
